The presentation explores the concept of influence in senior individual contributor (IC) roles, especially within large organizations like the BBC. The talk focuses on the importance of influence in driving technical decision-making and fostering communication among teams.
Introduction
Henry Wilson, a Senior Architect at the BBC, opens with a thought exercise about the skills crucial for senior IC roles. He posits that influence is the key skill for effectiveness, especially in senior engineering management roles.
Project Context
The talk revolves around a large-scale rearchitecture of BBC Sounds, a digital audio platform. Key changes involved shifting to a product operating model and platform engineering to enhance the digital offering.
Tools in the Influence Toolkit
- Spoken Communication: Engage through 1-to-1 conversations, group discussions, and workshops to build rapport and communicate visions effectively.
- Context Documentation: Create and share documents to scale influence beyond individual interactions by presenting visions and rationale.
- Feedback Mechanisms: Solicit direct and indirect feedback to assess and refine influence strategies.
- RFC and ADR Processes: Use these structured approaches to build consensus and document decisions.
Challenges and Complexities
The project faced technical complexities with microservices, social complexities with team restructuring, and operational challenges. These highlighted the need for influence to drive and implement changes effectively.
Conclusion
Wilson emphasizes that influence extends beyond just managerial authority and is crucial for IC roles. Building relationships and nurturing trust are essential for influencing team dynamics and technical decisions.
The talk ends with a Q&A session, where Wilson discusses strategies for gaining team buy-in when not fully aligned with organizational directives.

Abstract
Senior IC roles are often said to be about influence – but what do we mean by influence? And what are the tools that a senior IC can employ to influence individuals and teams within a large organisation? For this talk I’ll share my experience leading a large scale re-architecture, covering the different techniques in my Influence Toolkit and how they helped me to push forward technical decision making on the project.
