From Prompt to Production: How Spotify Builds Internal Tools in Days with AI and Platform Engineering

Abstract

Spotify Portal Studio + Claude — Empowering Internal Teams to Build Tooling

Internal teams everywhere face the same challenge: the tools they need most—quick utilities, custom dashboards, workflow automations—are too small to prioritize but too important to ignore. The result: spreadsheets become systems, manual work persists, and teams rebuild the same tools in silos.

In this session, we’ll show how our team uses Portal Studio (Spotify’s internal developer platform built on Backstage) together with Claude AI to collapse internal tool delivery from months to days. Claude accelerates scaffolding and template creation from plain-language descriptions, while Portal Studio provides the governance layer: consistent patterns, permissions, ownership, approved integrations, and auditability.

We’ll build a small internal tool live—from an initial prompt with Claude to a published Spotify Portal plugin—so you can see the full path from idea to usable internal tooling. You’ll leave with insights into how Portal Studio enables quick local iteration on Spotify Portal plugins—and how Claude accelerates the path from workflow description to production-ready tooling.
